Johnson-Thompson was clearly emotional when she spoke afterwards.

She considered quitting after tearing her calf at the Tokyo Olympics. She had already recovered from a ruptured Achilles in the lead up to those Games.

  4. 'I've got no words'

Katarina Johnson-Thompson speaking to BBC Sport after winning gold in the heptathlon: "I've got no words, I can't believe it. It's like being in a dream. No-one else could see the vision other than me and my team. It's been such a horrible experience being in the competition [in the 2022 World Championships] and not having a chance at gold. That's all I've wanted.

"I felt no nerves in the 800m. It's so easy to run when there's something on the line.

"I'm so happy that I've committed to trying again. It's all come good and I'm so happy.

"Jess [Ennis-Hill] is the person I learnt from back in 2012. Denise [Lewis] is always texting me. This is for her as well. I'm so happy we could do it.

"This wasn't a high-scoring heptathlon, but it was competitive. I'm so happy I could execute and come away with a win. To win is beyond my dreams."

  5. 'Kat did it'

Kat did it, she has to do the work. She has to believe and commit. She's had to go to the drawing board and find those things out for herself.

  6. Watch: Johnson-Thompson clinches gold in the 800m

It has been a special night for Great Britain in Budapest.

It ended with Zharnel Hughes' 100m bronze but first Katarina Johnson-Thompson completed a remarkable turnaround in her career by winning heptathlon gold.

She needed to stay within 2.5 seconds of American Anna Hall, who on paper is a stronger 800m runner.

Hall went out hard but Johnson-Thompson kept calm and finished under two seconds behind - running a personal best to take the world title for a second time.

  7. 'Hughes runs well with those two'

    Men's 100m final

    Michael Johnson

Four-time Olympic gold medallist athlete on BBC TV

Hughes runs well with Lyles and Tebogo. I don't really see anyone else in that 200m that can challenge the top three here.

  8. Watch: Lyles wins gold & Hughes bronze

    Here you go.

This is how Noah Lyles won gold in the men's 100m with Zharnel Hughes clinching a bronze for Great Britain...

Hughes didn't get the best start, but he got a much better start than his previous races. Zharnel's start has nothing technically wrong with it, he got more force into it in this one.

  10. 'Noah Lyles is a great ambassador'

We talked about this from the very beginning, it was a very open race. Noah Lyles is a great ambassador for the sport, it's a different thing being the 100m champion. He has the opportunity to win the 200m.

  11. 'I'm happy to leave with a medal'

Zharnel Hughes speaking to BBC Sport after finishing third in the 100m final: "I'm super, super, super grateful right now. Thank you to my team, thank you to my coach. This one is for you guys back home, it means the world to me. My heart is full with emotions. I wanted the gold medal, but I'm happy to leave with a medal.

"When they had a false start in the semi, it made me sit in my blocks a bit.

"I thought I got Lyles. When I saw the results and saw Tabogo's name I thought where did he come from?"

  12. 'We knew it would be amazing'

Amazing race, we knew it was going to be amazing. We thought there was a chance Noah Lyles would win gold and be a double world champion.

    Harry Poole

    BBC Sport in Budapest

We said it could be a massive night for Great Britain's athletes!

What a moment for Zharnel Hughes, who lands his first global medal little over an hour after Katarina Johnson-Thompson's heptathlon gold.

He sank to the floor when the result eventually came through on the board after an agonising wait.

A huge moment in his career, at the end of a sensational season, and there's still the 200m to come next week.

Noah Lyles is a VERY popular winner here, he's got involved with the crowd throughout the weekend.

  17. Lyles crowned champion

    Men's 100m final

The 100m isn't even Noah Lyles' best event. He's more of a 200m runner and will now have a chance for the double.

In the run-up to this event he said he'd break Usain Bolt's 200m world record in that event.

  18. Post update

    Men's 100m final

That's Great Britain's first medal at the world championships in the men's 100m since Darren Campbell in 2003.

Dina Asher-Smith won the women's title in 2019, of course.

  19. Post update

    Men's 100m final

It was so close on the line.

    A superb race.

Lyles has won it in 9.83 but then Tebogo, Hughes and Oblique Seville in fourth all finished in 9.88 seconds.
