Is it cold or hot in Texas now? ›

The summers in Texas provide long stretches of clear skies and warm temperatures. Our rainy season is mainly in the spring (March-May) and sometimes the early fall (September-October) as seasons begin to change. Showers are generally short and intense and rainy periods last 1 - 2 days. The winters are fairly mild.

The average high in January, the coldest month, is 62.9 °F (17.2 °C) and the low 43.2 °F (6.2 °C). George Bush Intercontinental Airport sees an average of 9.6 days per year of freezing temperatures. Cold fronts during the winter can bring nighttime lows that drop into the 30s but usually remain above freezing.

That depends on where you go. However, 2023 marked the hottest summer in over a decade and one of the most blistering on record, with nearly all locations reporting higher-than-average heat and humidity readings: The average summer temperature in Texas was 85.3°F. The average daily high was 98.3°F.

Based on the average daily temperature, its top 10 was (in ascending order): Florida, Hawaii, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina.

The panhandle region, farthest from the Gulf of Mexico, experiences colder winters than the other regions of Texas, where occasional wintertime Arctic blasts can cause temperatures to plunge to well below freezing and bring snowy conditions.

All of these cities are in the Panhandle area of Texas. Of the more southerly located areas which U.S. Climate Data has listed, (though these are still in the Panhandle) are Muleshoe and Dimmitt. “Amarillo is undoubtedly the coldest (big) city in Texas. The coldest temperature on record is -12 back in 1986.

The answer is in the Panhandle, particularly around and north of Amarillo. Amarillo has an average summer temperature of 76.5 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Average lows from June to August in Amarillo range from 61 to 65.2 degrees, and average summer highs range from 87.7 to 91.4 degrees.

Statistically, December is the second-coldest month of the year all across Texas. January is the coldest, and February comes in third. While many states to the north encounter much colder weather, Texas still sees its fair share of chilly days every winter.

Texas is known for its legendary cowboy culture, its large cities, its diverse landscapes, its delicious Tex-Mex cuisine, and its strong southern hospitality. It is also famous for its cattle and oil industry, its rodeos, its music, and its unique Texan culture.

Is Texas a good place to live? ›

Texas boasts excellent living conditions for a diverse range of households, from young singles to growing families and retirees. The most populous cities are Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, and Fort Worth. However, plenty of people find their slice of happiness away from the big cities in more rural areas, too.

In fact, the Old Farmer's Almanac winter outlook for 2024 says a lot the U.S. will see more snow than usual, and that includes essentially the entire northern portion of Texas. “Snowfall will be above normal across most snow-prone areas (except for the Pacific Northwest),” the 2023-24 winter outlook reads.

Florida is the hottest state in the US, with an average temperature of 73.4 °F. Louisiana is the second hottest state, with an average temperature of 68.5 °F, followed by Texas, the third hottest state, with an average temperature of 68 °F.

Even though California might have picturesque weather, not everywhere in California is cooler than Texas. "It's worth noting that the hottest parts of California, the desert along the border with Arizona, and Death Valley, are hotter than anywhere in Texas during most days in summer," Nielsen-Gammon said.

2024 summer outlook

The outlook, which is based on probability, gives San Antonio a 58% chance of above-average temperatures during the summer, a 33% chance of near-average temperatures and only a 9% chance of below-average temperatures.

El Paso has had 41 consecutive days (and counting) of temperatures above 100 degrees. Texas inmates are baking in the un-air-conditioned ovens of Texas prisons. And a congressman went on a thirst strike to advocate for federally mandated water breaks. July 2022 was the hottest on record for Austin, where I live.

Hotter temperatures, more wildfires

The report states that the average annual surface temperature in Texas in 2036 is expected to be 3 degrees warmer than the 1950-1999 average and 1.8 degrees warmer than the 1991-2020 average.
