Raspberry Mojito Recipe

Is it 5pm on Friday yet? Surely happy hour is almost here because this raspberry mojito is calling to me. A great happy hour starts with a great co*cktail. And when the summer temperatures are starting to kick in, there had better be something cool and refreshing at hand to ease you into the weekend. In the past, a Fresh Strawberry Tom Collins or a Pink Grapefruit Margarita valiantly competed for my affections.

Well, now there's a new sheriff in town.

I remember drinking my first mojito like it was yesterday. My husband and I were living in New York City and some of my girlfriends came for a visit. We hopped from museum to museum, restaurant to restaurant, eventually landing at Tavern on the Green on the edge of Central Park. One of my girlfriends had just spent several months working in the Caribbean, a little more than a stone's throw from Cuba, the birthplace of the mojito. As we sat on the patio of Tavern on the Green on a steamy summer's day, she insisted that we order a round of classic co*cktails. Twist my arm!

Tart, sweet, cold and refreshing, my first sip of the mojito lived up to everything my friend claimed. Muddled mint leaves and lime wedges gave it a wonderfully fresh flavor, and the shot of the rum eased me right into relaxation mode.

So, as soon I knew my friend would be coming for a visit a few weeks ago, I knew that mojitos had to be on the menu. I took all of the classic elements of a mojito, then added a handful of fresh raspberries for a pop of color and an extra dose of summertime flavors.

Suffice to say that I've found a clear winner in the summer co*cktail category.

What is in a mojito?

  • A classic mojito recipe includes ice, limes, mint, sugar, club soda and white rum (let's not forget the rum).
  • In this recipe, I swapped out the sugar and replaced it with agave nectar. Honey would work, too.
  • To add a summertime twist, I muddled some fresh raspberries with the lime and mint. Blackberries would also be a great option. I find that the end of a wooden spoon (not the spoon part) does the trick.

How do you shake a mojito? ›

Shaking the drink with large ice (1″ by 1″) will do the work of incorporating the mint in the co*cktail instead. But if you want to be extra safe, you can always give your mint a few light taps in your shaker with a muddler before shaking with the ice, but be careful not to over-muddle.

What is in an alcoholic mojito? ›

Rum, lime, mint and sugar (the island nation grows sugar cane) are joined together and then lengthened with thirst-quenching club soda to create a delicious, lighthearted co*cktail. The drink is traditionally made with unaged white rum, which yields a light, crisp flavor.

Are mojitos a healthy drink? ›

While a mojito can be a refreshing and enjoyable co*cktail, it is not typically considered a "healthy" drink due to its high sugar content and alcohol content.

Are mojitos high in alcohol? ›

How Strong Is the Mojito? The mojito is not a terribly strong co*cktail. When made with 80-proof rum, the alcohol content falls in the 13 percent ABV (26 proof) range. That makes it equivalent to a glass of wine, only far more refreshing.

Should you muddle limes in a mojito? ›

Do not over-muddle the mint, or muddle the lime with the ice cubes. These are strictly amateur moves. Do try Bacardi rum in your mojitos. For many of us, it is the closest thing we can get to real Cuban rum.

What is a classic mojito made of? ›

What's the difference between a mojito and a Cuban mojito? ›

Mint. Spearmint is most commonly used for mojitos and is what you'll likely find at the grocery store labeled generically as "mint." For an authentic Cuban mojito, use mojito mint, or Mentha x villosa, a type of mint native to Cuba with a more understated flavor than that of spearmint.

Given the addition of lime into this co*cktail, shaking releases the full flavor of the citrus in ways a simple stir cannot.

Do bartenders like to make mojitos? ›

The Mojito kind of has a bad rap with bartenders… It can be annoying to keep fresh mint leaves around, and muddling interrupts your flow behind the bar. But I've yet to find one person who doesn't agree that a Mojito made just right is a thing of beauty.

Which rum is best for Mojito? ›

White rum is generally the preferred spirit for the mojito. It tends to be crisp and light; some even have nuanced citrus or herbaceous tones that complement the other ingredients in the drink. Most importantly, the clarity of white rum just makes the drink look pristine, showing off the lime and mint in the glass.

Can mojito get you drunk? ›

The amount of alcohol in one Mojito is generally not extremely high, but it can contribute to feeling tipsy, especially if consumed relatively quickly.

What drink is similar to a mojito? ›

If you like a Mojito, then you'll love a Julep. This tall drink is a close cousin of the Mojito, with both sharing that citrusy, minty flavour. The only difference is that instead of rum, the Mint Julep is mixed with sweet, smooth whisky for a bit of extra golden depth.

What are mojitos typically made of? ›
