About Us
Our Australian Shepherds are something we are proud of at Maple Shade Farms. We can raise excellent dogs in our rural setting and allow them to spend a lot of time exploring our meadows and woodlands. On our dairy farm, we began with foundation stock that was primarily used for herding. As time passed we included show lines. In addition to the thicker coats that show lines have, we have wanted to provide the more traditional Irish spotting seen in tri-colored show lines. We have attempted to preserve some of the traditional herding instincts that Australians are renowned for while also incorporating these traits. At Maple Shade Farms, breeding for size is one of our other main priorities. On average, our males weigh between 60 and 75 pounds, and our females weigh between 45 and 60 pounds. Although this is a little larger than the AKC’s standard weight requirements, we always have a few dogs that are well within the range. Advertisem*nts for teacup, toy, or miniature Australian Shepherds may appear. These dogs aren’t accepted as genuine Australian Shepherds by Australian Shepherd breeders.
For more than ten years, we have been breeding Australian shepherds with an emphasis on producing dogs that can live in the suburbs or on farms. We don’t show our dogs or compete with them in trials.
All of our dogs have been tested for genetic abnormalities. In our testing, Paw Print Genetics and Embark have both been utilized. Selective breeding is used to minimize undesirable genetic conditions in our puppies. For a full year, we guarantee that none of our puppies will have any serious congenital defects. As adults, our Aussies are fed a nutritious diet of dry food from companies like Purina, Nutro, Canidae, and Diamond Natural. We advise pet owners to dispel the numerous myths regarding the “best” or highest-quality pet food.
We also provide nursing mothers and puppies with appropriate wet foods. When they reach the appropriate age, puppies are also given dry puppy chow and whole cow’s milk*.
Our dogs receive regular vaccinations and dewormings, as well as access to quality veterinary care when needed.
* We are aware that many groups, including veterinary professionals, advocate limiting or avoiding the use of cow’s milk. As breeders with a long history of raising Australian Shepherds, English Shepherds, and Border Collies on our dairy farm, we can guarantee that feeding cow’s milk to your puppy or adult dog won’t be harmful. Like with any diet, you have to introduce foods gradually and under close supervision. We have never had any negative consequences from giving our dogs or puppies milk from cows.
Australians have long been prized by stockmen for their trainability and versatility. They still work as stock dogs and participate in herding trials, but because of their trainability, eagerness to please, and exceptional obedience, they have gained recognition in other capacities. Like many working breeds, Aussies have considerable energy and drive. In addition to being very successful as search and rescue, disaster, detection, guide, service, and therapy dogs, they frequently excel at dog sports like dog agility and frisbee. The Aussie is a no-nonsense dog that is smart, industrious, and adaptable. He does best in a household where his energy and intelligence are utilized. Living with an Aussie doesn’t require you to maintain a flock of sheep, though it doesn’t hurt. Instead, you must keep him occupied. He is an energetic dog that doesn’t understand the term “couch potato” and wouldn’t condone it if he did.
He needs a small yard at the very least to keep himself from getting stressed out because he has a lot of energy to burn and needs plenty of exercise (a stroll around the neighborhood won’t do). When he has nothing to do, he gets loud, destructive, and bored. Alternatively, he could create his own occupation by taking apart your house, chasing cars or other animals, or herding your kids or the neighbors’. Australian Shepherds require a lot of socialization because they are frequently reported to be aloof toward strangers. If this isn’t done, it could cause aggressiveness and a fear of strangers. Your Australian should interact with friends, family, neighbors, and even complete strangers on a regular basis. Take your teenage Australian to a range of locations, including parks, ballfields, city sidewalks, and dog-friendly shopping malls. Please be advised that until your young Aussie puppy has received all of his or her vaccinations, you should not expose them to these environments.
