Flavorful Whipped Butter

I know Thanksgiving is still a couple months away, but put this on your MUST make list. Homemade dinner rolls are one of my favorite things ever. Now top them with this orange butter and you have yourself the most heavenly treat ever! Seriously, it is SO good! It is my favorite thing to put on rolls and super easy to whip up beforehand and store in the refrigerator. If you’re looking for more ideas, you’ll love this compound butter too.

This recipe comes from my friends over at Paging Super Mom. They told me about it a couple years ago and now it has been a staple at my house whenever we make rolls. They just aren’t the same without orange butter. So, of course, I had to share the recipe with you! Make it, you won’t regret it!

How to Make Orange Butter

  1. Softened butter. You can leave the butter out on the counter for a couple of hours, or simply microwave for about 15-20 seconds on 50% power. Just be careful not to melt it.
  2. Whip. Next you’re going to whip together the butter, powdered sugar, orange zest and orange extract. Whip until nice and creamy.
  3. Store. Make sure to store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. We like to take it out about an hour before serving to soften up a bit.

Storing + Freezing

You can easily cut this recipe in half or double it and store in the fridge for later. It stays fresh for about 4 weeks. You can also wrap and place in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Hi Mary! The directions aren’t covered on my end…maybe try opening up another browser. You just whip the butter until fluffy and then add the other ingredients and blend until smooth. :)

Do you have to use orange extract? Can you just use the juice from the orange that you get the zest from?

          • Jamielyn Nye

Hi Claire! You definitely could substitute if you would like, but the flavor won’t be as potent. :)

      FAQs

Why is my butter and sugar not fluffy? ›

The temperature of your butter is critical when creaming butter and sugar. Too cold, and your sugar won't properly dissolve into your butter. Too hot, and your cakes will end up flat and greasy. The magical temperature of softened butter is actually around 65℉, slightly cooler than the ambient temperature of your home.

What is lemon butter made of? ›

While all lemon butter recipes all contain the same ingredients: eggs, lemons, butter and sugar, the method can change, with some being made over a double boiler, or just stirred in a saucepan. There are also recipes for lemon curd that are made in the thermomix as well as the microwave.

What happens if you beat butter and sugar too long? ›

If you cream for too long, the mixture will transition from smooth and voluminous to a greasy, separated, deflated puddle that sits at the bottom of the bowl.

How long does butter take to get fluffy? ›

To get that perfect consistency and temperature, leave butter out on the counter for around 1 hour prior to beginning your recipe. If your cakes are dense, you're probably softening the butter too much. And butter that's too warm causes cookies to overspread.

How to fix grainy butter and sugar? ›

Your butter may have been too cold, or you didn't mix it enough. I let the butter whip a solid five minutes at least before adding any other elements, and then whip/beat the sugar in one cup at a time for about a minute each. Add some cream little by little if it's still grainy.

How do you fix clumpy butter and sugar? ›

Another tip, if the sugar and butter mixture appears slightly curdled, the butter was likely too warm or was beaten for too long. If that happens, don't worry. You can refrigerate the mixture for 5-10 minutes without risking the integrity of your recipe. After it regains some firmness, beat the mixture until creamy.

Why is my creaming butter and sugar still grainy? ›

Undermixed butter and sugar looks gritty and chunky, which can lead to dense cookies and cakes. It is possible to overmix the butter and sugar. If you overmix, the butter will separate out of the mixture and it will be grainy and soupy. Be sure to stop once your butter becomes light and fluffy.
